The 100th exhibition at the Postal Minigallery
|
An opening ceremony of the 100th jubilee exhibition 'Josef Seidel's Šumava' will be held on December 9th, 2009 at 7pm in the Postal Minigallery at the Post Office Prague 33, Přemyslovská 2. The exhibition displays a collection of unique historical pictures of the Šumava mountains by the famous photographer Josef Seidel (1859–1935). The exhibition is open until January 5th, 2010. |
The tradition of exhibitions held in the Postal Minigallery dates back to 2001 when the post office was located in the old premises on Zelenka-Hajský street. The eight photographs by Mirek Hynek featuring Prague at Night launched a series of monthly events, run for the 100th time in December 2009. This is the evidence that works of culture and art can bring pleasure to their authors and to the public even when displayed at other than traditional venues.
The jubilee exhibition displays photographs by Josef Seidel, a lover of beauty of the Šumava mountains. Born in Hasel (today's Lísky), Josef Seidel learned the photographic trade and spent years as a journeyman in a number of lands of the former Hapsburg monarchy. As every photographer at a small town he had to earn money by making portraits and the so-called social photography. As tourism and interest in commemorative postal (picture) cards grew, he began shooting Český Krumlov and other places. In the course of time he became the uncrowned king of Šumava photographers. |
